Vocab wordDefinition
Imperialism The policy of extending a nation's authority by territorial acquisition or by the establishment of economic and political hegemony over other nations.
Protectorate A relationship of protection and partial control assumed by a superior power over a dependent country or region.
Anglo Saxonism Whem americans thought that they were culturally superior to everyone else and wanted to spread the culture all around the world.
Josiah Strong Promoted domestic missionary activity in the American West. Historians suggest it may have encouraged support for imperialistic United States policy among American Protestants.
Matthew C. Perry Matthew Perry lived from April 10th 1794 to March 4th 1858, and served as a Commodore in the United States Navy; he was considered the man who opened up Japan to the Western World.
Queen Liliuokalani Queen Liliuokalani was the last reigning monarch of the Hawaiian islands. Hawaii was annexed to the United States and Queen Liliuokalani was forced to give up her throne.
James G. Blaine he took the first steps toward securing U.S. control of the eventual route of the Panama Canal.
Pan Americanism The principle or advocacy of a political alliance or union of all the states of America.
Alfred T. Mahan Mahan backed a revival of Manifest Destiny through overseas imperialism.
Henry Cabot Lodge He was an avid believer in the destiny of his country, an unwavering advocate of the Munroe Doctrine and a declared Anglophobe.
William Randolph Hearst William Randolph Hearst's New York Journal even published pictures. They showed how Spanish saboteurs had fastened an underwater mine to the Maine and had detonated it from shore.
Joseph Pulitzer Joseph Pulitzer of the World, viciously competed for the reader's attention. They were determined to reach a daily circulation of a million people, and they didn't mind fabricating stories in order to reach their goal.
Yellow Journalism Journalism that exploits, distorts, or exaggerates the news to create sensations and attract readers.
Enrique Dupuy de Lome Enrique Dupuy de Lôme was a Spanish diplomat is best known for a letter he wrote to a Spanish official in Cuba in 1898. The private correspondence was leaked to the American press and ultimately fueled popular cries for intervention in Cuba against Spain.
Jingoism Extreme nationalism characterized especially by a belligerent foreign policy; chauvinistic patriotism.
Theodore Roosevelt 26th president who was in the rough riders and the youngest person to become president after the original president has died.
George Dewey The United States Navy under Admiral George Dewey ousted Spain from the Philippines in the Spanish-American War of 1898.
Emilio Aguinaldo Emilio Aguinaldo (1869-1964) was a Filipino general who played an important role in the Philippine Revolution against Spain, and later led Filipino insurgent soldiers against American forces.
Rough Riders The First United States Volunteer Cavalry Regiment. Composed of cowboys, theodore roosevelt, scholars, land speculators, Native Americans and African Americans
Leonard Wood Rough Rider, Surgeon, Architect of American Imperialism.
Foraker Act U.S. federal law which established the governing structure for the island of Puerto Rico.
Platt Amendment The President of the U.S. is hereby authorized to ' leave the government and control of the island of Cuba to its people'
Sphere of Influence A territorial area over which political or economic influence is wielded by one nation.
Open Door Policy the policy of granting equal trade opportunities to all countries
Boxer Rebellion In 1900, a group known as the Boxers murdered thousands of foreigners, especially missionaries, in an attempt to rid China of all foreign influence.
Great White Fleet The "Great White Fleet" sent around the world by President Theodore Roosevelt from 16 December 1907 to 22 February 1909 consisted of sixteen new battleships of the Atlantic Fleet.
Hay Pauncefote Treaty the Hay-Pauncefote Treaty of 1901 set out U.S. and British interests in connection to a canal through Central America.
Dollar Diplomacy A policy aimed at furthering the interests of the United States abroad by encouraging the investment of U.S. capital in foreign countries.
