Lewis and Clark Lead expedition commissioned by President Jefferson to explore the West.
Aaron Burr Running mate of Thomas Jefferson in the Presidential Election of 1800.
John Marshall Chief Justice of the Supreme Court appointed by John Adams.
Judiciary Act of 1801 Pushed through congress by President John Adams, increased the number of federal judges by 16 in an attempt to control future federal decisions.
Midnight Judges Judges appointed by John Adams as a result of the Judiciary Act of 1801.
Marbury v. Madison 1803, William Marbury who was one of the midnight judges sued the Federal government (and Secretary of State James Madison) because he had never received his official papers.
Principle of Judicial Review The ability of the Supreme Court to declare an act of Congress unconstitutional.
Louisiana Purchase Purchase of Louisiana territory from France. It included all the land drained by the western tributaries of the Mississippi River. It more then doubled the size of the United Sates.
Sacajawea Native American woman who served as interpreter and guide to Lewis and Clark.
Why was the United States concerned about the Louisiana Territory? They feared that if Farnce had control of the middle of the continent that the United State would be forced into an alliance with Britain.
Why was the War of 1812 important? It confirmed American independence and strengthened nationalism.
Blockade To seal up ports and prevent ships from entering or leaving.
Impressment The practice of seizing Americans at sea and "impressing" or drafting them into the British navy.
Embargo A ban on exporting products to other countries.
William Henry Harrison Governor of the Indiana Territory. He invited several native American chiefs to Fort Wayne, Indiana and convinced them to sign away three million acres of land to the U.S.
War Hawks A group of congressmen from the South and West who called for war against Britian.
Why did the war hawks call for the war with Britian? They learned the the native american confederacy were using weapons from British Canada.
What was the Battle of Tippecanoe? Harrison's attack on the Shawnee capital, known as Prophetstown.
Tecumseh Shawnee Chief who believed that native americans should form a confederacy and protect their land against white settlers.
What was Jefferson's reasoning behind the embargo of 1807? He believed that it would hurt Britain and Europe and force the to honor American neutrality.
Was the embargo of 1807 successful? It hurt America more then Britain and in 1809 Congress lifted the ban on foreign trade, except with France and Britain.
Who won the Presidential election of 1808? James Madison
Was James Madison a Federalist or Democratic Republican? Democratic Republican.
Which president decided to go to war with Britian in 1812? James Madison.
Andrew Jackson General from Tennessee who won a series of battles in the War of 1812.
Treaty of Ghent Treaty between the American's and British ending the War of 1812.
Armistice End of fighting.
When did trade reopen between American and Britian? In 1815, due to the commercial treaty.
Judiciary Act of 1789 Created a judicial structure that has remained essentially intact.
Why did federal law have to be "the supreme Law of the Land" in the new nation? Section 25 of the Judiciary Act allowed state court decisions to be appealed to a federal court when constitutional issues were raised. This was directed by Article 6 of the constitution.
Alexander Hamilton Secretary of the Treasury under George Washington.
Was Alexander Hamilton a Federalist or Democratic Republican? Federalist
Cabinet President's chief advisers.
What are the three executive departments? Department of State, Department of War, Department of the Treasury.
What is the role of the Department of State? Deal with foreign affairs.
What is the role of the Department of War? Handle Military matters.
What is the role of the Department of the Treasury? Manage Finances.
Who was the first Secretary of state? Thomas Jefferson.
Describe the Bank of the United States? Proposed by Alexander Hamilton. It would issue paper money and handle tax receipts and other government funds.
Who proposed to move the capital of the United States from New York? Alexander Hamilton, in order to win the support for his debt plan from the Southern states.
What were Hamilton's views? Strong central government led by a prosperous, educated elite of upper-class citizens.
What were Thomas Jefferson's views? Distrusted a strong central government. He favored strong state and local governments.
Why did the new nation need to pay off its debts? To give the creditors - the people who originally loaned money to the country - an incentive to support the enw federal government. If the government failed they would never get their money back.
Federalist? Strong Federal government in relation to state and local governments. Support Alexander Hamilton.
Democratic-Republicans? Supported strong state governments. Support Thomas Jefferson.
Describe Two-party system. Government officials coming from two opposed parties.
Protective Tariff Import tax on goods produced in Europe.
Excise tax Tax on a product's manufacture, sale or distribution.
Describe the Whiskey rebellion. Reaction to excise tax on Whiskey pushed by Hamilton. Effected small frontier farmers whose major crop was corn. Because the corn was too heavy to transport they distilled the corn into Whiskey. In 1794 farmers refused to pay the tax.
How did the Whiskey rebellion end. 15,000 Federal Militiamen were called up and marched over the Alleghenies and scattered the rebels without loss of life.
U.S. Neutrality Statement that the United States would support neither side in the conflict.
Edmond Genet French diplomat who worked in the U.S. to win American support for France.
Why did the United States want to maintian neutrality in the British and French conflict? Entering a war was not in the new nation's interest.
Thomas Pinckney U.S. Minister to Great Britian
Pinckney's treaty of 1795 Spain gave up claims to land east of the Mississippi (except Florida).
Why did the United States want access to the Mississippi River? For shipping rights.
Little Turtle Chieftan of the Miami tribe who lead a confederacy of native american groups against the U.S.
Why did native americans demand negotiations with the U.S. over the Northwest Territory? They were excluded from the Treaty of Paris.
John Jay Chief Justice of Supreme Court who negotiated a treaty with Britain.
Why were American's upset with John Jay's Treaty It allowed the British to continue fur trade on the U.S. side of Canadian border.
Sectionalism Placing the interests of one region over those of the nation as a whole.
How did political parties affect the results of the election of 1796? Southern states voted for Jefferson, while northern states voted for Adams.
XYZ Affair Instead of meeting with U.S. officials a delegation from France demanded a $250,000 bribe.
What was the result of the XYZ affair? Anti-French feeling in the U.S.
Alien and Sedition Acts Raised the residence requirement or U.S. citizen and allowed the president to deport.
Who called the Alien and Sedition acts a violation of freedom of speech? Democratic-Republicans.
Who organized opposition to the Alien and Sedition acts? Thomas Jefferson and James Madison.
Nullification Idea that states had the right to nullify or consider void acts of congress that they deemed unconstitutional.
When did Washington die? December 14, 1799.
