Pre-Revolutionary War

French Exploration both Britain and France began to move onto the Ohio River Valley, established trade for Beaver Skins, french came to halt English expansion
Salutary Neglect allowed democracy in colonies
Navigation Acts 1650-73 trade only w/ Britain, keep the French out, shipbuilding increased protection from British navy, limited manufacture, low prices, pay high prices for goods
Enforcement difficult, corrupt agents
Mercantilism favorable balance of trade for England, raw materials to mother country to make it self suffiecient, effected all colonies
King George's War (1744-48) Louisbourg, at the peace treaty Louisbourg was given back to the french which angered the new englanders who had fought for the fort
George Washington 1754 Virginia's governor sent GW to secure west lands claimed by VA attacked Fort Duquesne (French) Washington and men had to retreat and build fort Neccessity
French/Indian War (1754-63) fought over beaver skins, most french forces in Europe
Albany Congress attempt at unification, 7 colonies, to keep Iroquis loyal to Britain, long range effect was colonial unity, Franklin developed a system of home rule which the delegates accepted, colonies didn't want to give up self taxation powers
British early battles didn't go well, British didn't approve of colonial regulars who used guerilla warfare
Treaty of Paris 1763 French power in America all but gone, Spain took over some French claims in Louisiana, England gained all land east of the mississippi
Colonists borne the brunt of the battles, gained military experience, shattered the myth of invulnerability
Friction b/w the colonists and British troops, no recognition of American rank above captain, low opinion of colonial troops by British
British Reaction Brits upset at reluctance of the colonies to aid in the war, many american shippers traded with the French, reimburse colonies for expenditures
Problems of Unity distance between colonies, geographic barriers, religious conflicts, nationalities, different governments, class issues, boundary disputes
Indian Losses lost main allies against the British
George III changes in colonial policy, came with the rise to his power, end of salutary neglect, had to pay for cost of war, colonies should pay more
Proclamation of 1763 colonists were not allowed to move past the Appalachian mountains
