Melting pot- A mixture of people of different cultures and races who blended togeter by abandoning their native languages and customs.
Nativism- Overt favortism toward native-born Americans
What was the Chinese Exclusion Act? Banned entry to all Chinese except students, teachers, merchants, tourists, anfd government.
Gentlemen's Agreement- A 1907-1908 agreement by the government of Japan to limit Japanese emigration to the United States.
Urbanization- Growth of cities
Americanization movement- Was designed to assimilate wide-ranging cultures into dominant culture (American).
Why did people migrate from country to cities? More People used machines for fariming, than laborers.
Why did people go to city? It was cheap and a convenient place to live.
Tenements- Multifamily urban dwelling
What was the political machine? An organized group that controlled a political party in a city.
Rutherford B. Hayes- When the Congress refused to support the merit system, he appointed intendants to the cabinets and commissioned an investigation on the nation's customhouse.
Chester A Arthur- supported merit system; Pedleton Civil Service Law
What was the Pedleton Civil Law Act- Established a bipartisan civil service commission to make appointments to government jobs by the merit system.
James Garfield- Gave patronage to reformers, which angered the Stalwarts; was assassinated
Greaft- Illegal use of political influence for personal gain
Americanization movement- A movement of assimilating a wide-ranging culture into a dominant culture(American).
What are Benjamin Harrison's view on tariffs? He wanted to raise the tariffs
What are Grover Cleveland's view on tariffs? He wanted to lower tariffs
Jane Addams- An advocate of the Social Gospel movement.
