QuestionAnswer
Backcountry. It ran along the Appalachian mountains through the far western part of the other regions.
Subsistence farming. That is, hey produced just enough food for themselves and sometimes a little extra to trade in town.
Triangular trade this was the name given to a trading route with three stops.New England Africa and west indies.
Navigation Acts. The Navigation Acts had four major provisions designed to ensure that England made money from its colonies trade.1651.
Smuggling. Importing or exporting goods illegally.
Gristmill. There millers crushed the grain between heavy rocks to produce flower or meal.
Artisans. Craftspeople of some kind.
Conestoga wagons. Wagons that German settlers made to carry their produce to town.
Indigo. A plant that yields a deep blue die.
Eliza Lucas. A young woman who had introduced Indigo as a successful plantation crop after her father sent her to supervise his South Carolina plantations when she was 17.
Overseers. Men hired by planters to watch over and direct the work of slaves.
Stono Rebellion. In September 1739, about 20 slaves gathered at the Stono river just south of Charles town.Wielding guns and other weapons, the killed several planter families and marched south, beating drums and loudly inviting other slaves to join them in plan.
Appalachian Mountains. Stretched from eastern Canada to south Alabama.
Fall line. The place were water falls prevent large boats from moving farther up river.
Piedmont. Meaning "foot" of the mountain.It is the broad plateau that leads to Blue Ridge Mountains of the Appalachian range.
