Massachusetts Bay A colony established in 1620 by John Winthrop to worship freely.
Connecticut A colony established in 1633 by Thomas Hooker to limit governnment power.
Rhode Island A colony established in 1636 by Roger Williams to seperate church and state.
New Hampshire A colony established in 1636/1680 by John Wheelwright for trade.
Charles I Became king of England in 1625. Declined all Puritan beliefs and had them expelled from universities or even jailed.
John Winthrop A lawyer and a devout christian who started the Massachusetts colony.
Thomas Hooker A puritan minister who led 100 settlers out of the Massachusetts Bay. His goal was to limit government power.
Roger Williams A young minister in Massachusetts who believed the Puritan church had to much power. He went to R.I. to establish religious tolerance.
Anne Hutchinson A devout Puritan who got in trouble for criticizing ministers beliefs. Her, along with some friends fled to Rhode Island.
Metacom The chief of the Wamponaog Indians in 1675 who attacked villages throughout New England.
Puritan a religious group that went to find a new colony someplace else.
Fundamental Orders of Connecticut A plan of government wrote in 1639 to let men who were property owners vote and to give the governor limited power.
Native Americans and Colonists In 1675, a large conflict came between the Native Americans and the colonists as the colonist started to claim more land. A battle came and lasted for 14 months. The Native Americans killed more than 600 settlers but were defeated.
Toleration A willingness to let others practice there own religious beliefs.
Town Common Center part of town where animals grazed freely.
Meeting House Located close to the town common and the location of town meetings
Town Meetings Discussions and voting on town issues.
New York Settled in 1624 by dutch. originally named New amsterdam but in 1664 the English invaded it the dutch's leader, Stuyvesant, surrendered
New Jersey Settled in 1660. Allowed religious freedom.
Pennsylvania Founded by William Penn in 1682. King Charles II granted him this land.
Proprietary colony Giving land to one or more people.
Royal colony A colony, such as New Jersey, which is under the control of the English.
backcountry the area of land along the eastern slopes of the Applachian Mountains.
Cash crops Crops that are sold for money such as wheat,barley and rye.

Patroon Rich famillies who own huge estates.
Quakers One of the most depised religious groups in England.
William Penn Founder of the colony Pennsylvania in 1682. A personal friend of king Charles II, but shocked the world when he joined the Quakers.
Peter Stuyvesant The governor of New Netherland who swore to defend them againest England. But his colonist were so unhappy about his harsh rules and high taxes, they didn't help him and he surrendered without firing a shot.
