What are the common categories of lipids? fats, oils and waxes
What are solid lipid molecules made of? (room temperature) Glycerol (alcohol) and saturated fatty acids
What are the liquid lipids like olive oil and corn oil made of? (room temperature) Glyerol and unsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids
What is the difference between saturated, unsaturated and polyunsaturated in a fatty acid? saturated-all bonds filled, unsaturated-at least one C-C bond double, poly->1 C-C double
What are nucleic acids? Polymers made from monomers known as nucleotides with O. N, C, P
What are the parts of a nucleotides? A 5-carbon sugar, a phosphate group and a nitrogenous base
What is the function of nucleic acids? To store and transmit hereditary or genetic information
What are the two types of nucleic acids? ribonucleic acid (RNA)and deoxyribonnucleic acid (DNA)
What are proteins made of? amino acids
What are the elements in proteins? C, H, O, and N
Amino acids have a _______ on one end and a _____ on the other and these bond to the next molecule carboxyl acid and amino group
How many different amino acids are found in nature? About 20
