| Backcountry | The land that ran along the eastern side of the Appalachian mountains. |
| Triangular Trade | The name given to a trade route that stopped in three places for accumulation of wealth, products, and slaves. |
| Navigation Acts | In 1651 England passed rules to make sure they got profits from the triangular trade. |
| Smuggling | Importing and exporting goods illegally. |
| Cash Crops | Crops grown in bulk to sell for money. |
| Gristmill | A place farmers took their crops to be crushed into flour or meal. |
| Diversity | Variety in people. |
| Artisans | Craftspeople, they could be iron workers, glass workers, make furniture or kitchen ware. |
| Conestoga Wagons | Built to carry artisans' products. They were suitable for dirt roads because they had wide wheels and a curved bed and a canvas cover. |
| Indigo | A cash crop that yields a deep blue dye. |
| Eliza Lucas | A woman that introduced indigo as a successful crop. |
| Overseers | People employed to watch the work of slaves. |
| Stono Rebellion | In September 1739 some slaves rioted near the Stono River. They were captured and executed. |
| Appalachian Mountains | A mountain range that stretched from Canada to Alabama east of the Mississippi River. |
| Fall Line | A place in a river with a waterfall that prevents boats from moving up river. |
| Piedmont | Foot of the mountains. A broad plateau that leads to the Blueridge Mountains. |
| Clans | Large groups of Irish families that came to the backcountry. |
