American Exceptionalism origin: city on a hill function: belief that US can have the right to tell others what to do
American Expansionism origin: excetpionalism function: populating land for a purpose; power leads to political, money, military
American Dream origin: frontier/oppertunity function: better life, expansion, individualism; success, freedom, opportunity
American Outsider origin: wealth/poverty, racism, sexism function: challenge ideals
Great Plains -the grassland extending through the west-central portion of the US -two distinct and very developed Native American ways of life existed here
Homestead Act -passed in 1862 by congress -offered 160 acres of land free to anyone who would live on and cultivate the land for 5 years -lots of families took advantage of this offer from the govt
Exodusters -African Americans who moved from the post-reconstruction South to Kansas in a great exodus -several thousand settlers were like this
Sand Creek Massacre -November 29, 1863 -Chivington and his troops went to 500 Cheyenne camped out -Chivington wanted to seek revenge on the Native Americans for killing his family -200 Native Americans killed -mostly women and children killed
Sitting Bull -aka Tatanka Yotanka -medicine man and leader of the Sioux
George Armstrong Custer -civil war hero -colonel in the 7th Calvary to investigate and send back a report on the gold situation in the Black Hills of South Dakota
Assimulation -Native Americans were expected to give up their beliefs and way of life and become part of the white culture
Dawes Act -1887; an effort to make assimulation the official government policy the act was passed -broke up the reservations -aim of this was to "americanize" the Native Americans by cultivating in them the desire to own property and farm -broke up reservations
Ghost Dance -a ritual dance -the Sioux were promised that if they performed this dance the buffalo would return -spread rapidly among 25000 Sioux on the Dakota reservation
Battle of Wounded Knee -there was a misunderstanding of the Ghost Dance...what triggered the battle -this event brought the Indian wars----and an entire era to a bitter end -corpse left to freeze on the ground -7th Calvary
Longhorn -cattle brought by the Spainards, first to the West Indies and then to Mexico -sturdy, long-horned, short-tempered breeds that were accustomed to the dry grasslands of Andalusia (Southern Spain) -used the horses as work animals and the cattle for food
James Bulter "Wild Bill" Hickok -legendary figure -served as a scout and a spy during the civil war -marshal in Abilene, Kansas -violent man, who was shot and killed while holding a pair of aces "dead mans hand"
"Calamity Jane" Martha Jane Cannary -expert market woman -dressed like a man -spread exaggerated stories about herself, and some historians think she was a scout for Colonel George Custer -an entertainer for 'Wild West Shows'
Long Drive -took place after the herd was gathered and branded -the trail boss chose a crew for this
Homesteader -settlers on the Great Plains
Soddy -sod home -small homes, that offered little light or air -warm in the winter and cool in summer -was like an island of color when the wild flowers bloomed -fire proof -leaked when rained
Morrill Land Grant Acts 1862 and 1890 -gave federal land to the states to help finance agriculture colleges
Bonaza Farms -created by George Cass and Oliver Darlymple -enormous, single-crop spreads of 10,000 acres or more
Bimetalism -the "free silverites" favored this -a policy in which the govt would give people either gold or silver in exchange for paper currency or checks
William McKinley -a conservative Ohioian for president -committed to the gold standard
William Jennings Bryan -former member of Congress from Nebraska -editor of the Omaha "World Herald" -delivered an impassionate address to the assembled delegates (excerpt known as "Cross of Gold"
Oliver Kelley -farmer -started the Patrons of Husbandry (an organization known as the Grange)
Grange -organization for farmers -purpose was to provide a social outlet and an educational forum for isolated farm families -gave rise to other organizations, such as Farmer's Alliance
Populism -the movement of the people -born with the people's party in 1892
Meritocracy -not bound by family, but by action -the present, NOT the past
