QuestionAnswer
Charter Colony The people and an assembly govern themselves without a governor. There is a charter granted by the king that can be taken away. The people make the decisions. (ex. CT and RI)
Proprietary Colony The king gives land to a person. The king has no control or authority. (Examples: MD, PA DE)
Royal Colony The king is in charge but appoints a governor to be in charge in his absence. The people make decisions/rules/laws. The king can overrule the governor. The governor can overrule the people. (ex: MA, VA, NY, NH, NJ, GA, NC, SC)
Colony A non-self governing territory; the issue is CONTROL. It is an overseas possession (must be a distance away.)
feudalism a system where people who own land give it away to others in exchange for protection
nations a group of people with similar customs, cultures, and heritage. Live close to each other.
Middle Ages Period of history from 500-1000 after the fall of the Roman Empire; also called the Dark Ages
Dark Ages Another name for the Middle Ages; the period of history from 500-1000 after the fall of the Roman Empire
stagnate not moving; nothing new; everything stays the same
Crusades Series of religious wars (1070-1300); Pope make a decree that all should go to Jerusalem and take it back from the Muslims.
Renaissance Rebirth (1200); peasants started to travel; ideas were exchanged; goods were traded; towns and cities developed.
Age of Exploration end of the Middle Ages (1400-1500s) countries (England, Spain, Italy, and Portugal)wanted to trade because trade meant wealth and wealth meant power.
Silk Road Trade route to the East which was very long and dangerous to travel; people killed and goods stolen.
Northwest Corridor Passage Water route that Spain, Portugal, Italy, and England were looking for that would take them through the New Land and give them a shorter, safer route to the East for trade.
Protestant People who split from the Catholic Church because they did not believe in all of the practices of the Catholic Church. Comes from the word "protest".
Puritans Broke away from the Anglican Church of England because they wanted to purify the Church of England; started at time of Queen Elizabeth
Separatists Broke away from the Anglican Church of England because they wanted to separate from the Church of England; started at time of Queen Elizabeth
Settler stationary and stay in one place; they settle; have a house (GO-FIND-STAY)
explorer only find places; go to many places; go around the world; claim places; move a lot; always going somewhere (GO-FIND-COME HOME)

What do settlers need to do when they arrive? - have/make a plan - decide on a leader - pick a good spot for health, defense, and fit plan - befriend natives
Problems with Jamestown Colony - wrong place - swampy - gentlemen (not farmers) - didn't decide on leader until they arrived - no nearby fresh water - mosquitoes (disease) - cold winters; hot sticky summers
Powhatan Algonquin leader of five tribes; very powerful
John Smith leader in Jamestown; negotiated peace between natives and colonists
Starving Time Winter 1609-1610; John Smith gone; thought they had enough supplies; natives "lay siege", surrounding colony; colonists did not have enough food
Protestant Refomation new Anti-Catholic Christian groups were formed (1500s); believed Catholics were corrupt and not following the Bible
Anglican Church Church of England; started by Henry VIII in 1530; made himself head of church so he could get a divorce
