| Concurrent Powers | Powers shared by the state and federal gov'ts |
| Due Process | Procedures established by law and guarenteed by the constitution |
| Double Jeopardy | Putting someone on trial for a crime of which he/she was previously aquitted |
| Elastic Clause | Clause in Artical I, Section 8 of the constitution that gives congress the right to make all laws "necessary and proper" to carry out its expressed powers |
| Expressed Powers | Powers that congress has that are specifically listed in the constitution |
| Filibuster | A tactic for defeating a bill in the senate by talking until the bills sponsor withdrawls it |
| Legislative Branch | the lawmaking branch of gov't |
| Preamble | The opening section of the constitution |
| Reserved Powers | Powers that the Constitution does not give to the national gov't that are kept by the states |
| Self Incrimination | When under arrest you do not have to answer questions you are asked until you are in the presence of a lawyer |
| Enumerated Powers | Powers given to the Federal gov't |
| Supremacy Clause | Laws and rules made by the national gov't should be the supreme law of the land |
| Speaker of the House | Most powerful leader in the House of Representatives |
| President Pro Tempore | The person who usually acts as chairperson of the Senate |
| Party Whips | Help the leaders on the floor-in the senate- keep track of where party members stand on proposed legislation |
| Senate | A governing body that is the upper house of legislature |
| House of Representatives | A governing body that is the lower house of legislature |
| Anarchy | A state or society w/o gov't or law |
| Bill | a form or draft of a proposed statute presented to a legislature, but not yet enacted or passed and made law |
| Law | the principles and regulations established in a community by some authority and applicable to its people, whether in the form of legislation or of custom and policies recognized and enforced by judicial decision |
| President of the Senate | chairman or head of the senate |
| Immunity | Exemption from criminal prosecution or legal liability or punishment on certain conditions |
| majority leader | the leader of the majority party in each house of Congress |
| minority leader | the leader of the minority party in each house of Congress |
