What was Balboa(1513) known for? He explored Panama to the Pacific Ocean.
What was Magellan(1519) known for? He circumnavigated the globe.
What was Leon(1521) known for? Florida Coliny but failed and searched for the fountain of youth.
What was Cortez known for? He conquered the Aztecs(Montezuma) in Tenochtitlan(Mexico City).
How did the indians get to the "Americas"? The Bering Strait
Where did the indians go? Aztec, Maya, Inca, and North America(small and scattered tribes).
What was De Soto(1539) known for? He explored florida and crossed the Mississippi river.
What was De Coronado(1542) known for? He mapped the Southwest.
What was Pizarro(1532) known for? He conquered the Incas in Peru.
What was Cabrillo(1542) known for? He explored the California region.
What was the impact of the Conquistadors? They got LAND and established ESTATES and MISSIONS(to expand Catholicism) and MESTIZOS(a person 1/2 spanish and 1/2 indian).
Why did Spanish colonies grow slowly? Because of PIRATES and MERCANTILISM.
Who were the 2 most popular Pirates of the Carribean? Henry Morgan and Sir Francis Drake
Where was the first permanent European settlement and what was it used for? St. Augustine, it was used as a fort to protect Spanish goods from pirates.
What motivated the French to explore? 3 G's. Gold, Glory, God
Who settled in the New World for France? Huguenots and Catholics
Who were the Huguenots? They were French Protestants seeking religious freedon from Catholics.
Who changed England? Queen Elizabeth I 1558
WHat did Queen Elizabeth do that changed England? She strengthened the Navy and had Pirates stealing from Spain.
Who made Englands first attempt at settlement? Sir Gilbert(1578) He died in attempt to make settlement in Newfoundland and find the NORTHWEST PASSAGE.
What happened to the Roanoke Colony(the lost colony)? They dropped people off and when they returned a year later nobody was left to be found. They tried again but the dame thing happened.
What happened to the Spanish Armada? It was defeated by the British in 1588 making Britian #1 power in Europe.
What led to success of English colonization compared to other European countries? New Businesses(Joint Stock Companies which provided limited liability to investors.) and New freedoms.
Where did England establish its 1st permanent settlement in the New World? Jamestown
Why didnt the English do well once they got to Jamestown? The stayed next to a malaria invested swamp and most died of starvationg and disease.
Who saved Jamestown? John Smith
What did John Smith do to save Jamestown? He told the people "He who will not work will not eat." So those who decided to be lazy and not contribute ended up dieing of starvation.
After John Smith died the next leader was Lord de la Warr, what did he do differently than John? He let people eat regaurdless of their work ethics.
Covenant Theology? Forced puritan religion.
Roger Williams believed? Seperation of church and state. No one could determine who was saved or damned.
Roger Williams was frounder of? What type of colony was it? Rhode Island, New England
Antinomianism a belief where there isnt a relationship bewteen ones faith and ones work.
What happened in Salem in 1692? Witchcraft

Describe quakers. They were extremely religious. Refused to fight for any reason.
Why did the Middle colonies get the nick name the bread colonies? They grew grain.
Quakers where mainly found in what colony? Pennsylvania
Who led the QUAKERS to find religious freedom? William Penn
What was the HOLY EXPERIMENT? A plave where ALL religions were tolerated and ALL people treated equally. NO SLAVERY! Indians treated like the rest. Education for women.(pennsylvania)
How did the new Stuart King, King James II impact the colonies 1865? Reorganization restoring all power to the monarchy.
What did King James II do? He disbanded the New England Confederation that was established in 1643.
What was the COlonial reaction to the Dominion of New England? Protestant revolts, and the Liesler's Rebellion of 1869
What was the Liesler's Rebellion of 1869? Liesler took control over New York as governer for a yr and then u=hung by the British who then took control again.
What happened to King James II? he was removed in the GLORIOUS REVOLUTION of 1688-89
What party was against the King? Whig
What party was supportive of the King? Tory
How did King George II handle the Carolina disputes and differences? He split them into two seperate colonies 1729
Who settled in the New England colonies? Puritans
What were the Puritans motives? To seek religious freedom.
Who persecuted the Puritans because they saw them as crazy religious fanatics? James I and Charles I
Where did the Seperatists Puritans(Pilgrims) first settled to migrate? Holland 1608
Whats the Mayflower Compact? The Puritans vowed allegiance with King James I, vowed to give all glory to god, and wrote dwn and established civil laws and administration through a MAJORITY RULES foundation.
