Industrial Revolution period of time when inventors created machines to perform a lot of work, so people left their homes and farms to work in mills (factories) to earn money
capitalism economic system of the United States where people put their money into a business in the hopes of making money if the business is successful
capital money put into businesses in the hope of making more money (investments)
free enterprise another term used to describe the economic system of the United States; where people are free to buy, sell and produce whatever they want and can work wherever they wish
technology scientific discoveries that make work more simple
cotton gin a simple machine that quickly and efficiently removed the seeds from the cotton fiber so cotton could be cleaned faster instead of having many people to clean it with their hands
patent gives an inventor the legal right to their invention and the money that their invention makes for a certain amount of time
factory system a system where all of the manufacturing steps were brought into one place to be more efficient; for example, all stages of making cloth were done under one roof
interchangeable parts identical machine parts that could be quickly put together to make a complete project; all like parts could be produced in mass, thus reducing the price of the goods
census official count of a population
turnpike toll roads (roads built and a few is charged to those travelling on the road in order to pay for construction)
canal an artificial (man made) waterway made to connect water ways to each other for transporting goods by steamboat
sectionalism loyalty to ones region (area where they lived)
internal improvements federal, state, and privately funded projects, such as canals and roads, to develop the nation’s transportation system
American System Henry Clay’s program which included a protective tariff; a program of internal improvements (see above); a program for a national bank to control inflation and to lend money to build developing industries
disarmament removal of weapons
demilitarize a border without armed forces
court-martial tried by a military court for overstepping instructions
lock separate compartments on a canal where water levels were raised or lowered to provide a way to raise and lower boats at places where canal water levels changed
