| precedent | traditions – something takes place once and then happens again and again regularly |
| cabinet | a group of people, leaders or heads of departments who work together |
| national debt | the amount of money that a nation’s government owes |
| bonds | paper notes promising to repay the money in a certain length of time |
| speculators | people who will risk giving their own money and lending it to others in order to make more money |
| unconstitutional | against the law of the constitution (not following the rules that were written) |
| tariff | a tax on imports (add more cost to items purchased outside of America) |
| neutrality | not taking sides in a conflict |
| impressment | where the British captured American merchant ships and forced their crews into the British navy |
| partisan | in favor of one side of an issue (for one view and against another) |
| implied powers | powers that were not specifically forbidden (not allowed) in the Constitution |
| caucus | meetings held by the Federalists and Republicans to prepare for the election by choosing possible leaders (for the office of president) from their party. |
| aliens | immigrants (people who leave their own country to move to and live in another country) living in the country who were not citizens (and not necessarily loyal to American beliefs) |
| sedition | activities that cause the government to become weak |
| nullify | legally overturn (cancel, make void) |
| state's rights | limiting the federal government to those powers clearly assigned to it by the Constitution and reserving to the states all other powers not specifically forbidden to them |
