domestic tranquility peace at home (keep peace among the people in a country)
popular soereignty authority of the people
Republicanism system where voters/people hold governmental power
Federalism or federal system; a system in which the power to govern is shared between the national government and the states
enumerated powers powers belonging to the federal government (including making money, regulating interstate and foreign trade, maintaining armed forces, and creating federal courts)
reserved powers powers belonging to the state governments (including establishment of schools, passing of marriage and divorce laws, regulating trade within a state)
concurrent powers powers shared by the state and federal governments (including the right to raise taxes, borrow money, provide for public welfare, and administer criminal justice)
Amendment changes to the Constitution
implied powers powers not specifically defined in the Constitution
Judicial review the right of the Supreme Court to determine if a law violates the Constitution
appropriate to set aside (as in Congress setting aside money that the government can spend)
impeach to bring formal charges against any federal official (even the President) for wrongdoing or misconduct
constituents the people that Congress represents from their home states or districts
dues process of law means that the government must follow procedures established by the Constitution, treating all people according to these principals
citizen a person who owes loyalty to and is entitled to the protection of a state or nation
naturalization process where a person of foreign birth can become a citizen
