Enlightenment Historical Period in the 18th century where people started to think about government and the rights of the people.
Declaration of Independence Document written by Thomas Jefferson declaring that the 13 colonies were breaking away from an unjust ruler.
Natural rights Rights that our founding fathers believe that all men are born with-the right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness"
Industrial Revolution This "revolution" or change, was brought about by using machines and new sources of power in factories
Mass production This is the term applied to large amounts of goods being made at the same time
Urbanization This refers to the flow of people from the country into the cities.
Irish potato famine This was the reason why many Irish migrated to the United States in the 1840's.
Labor Unions These were formed to that workers could act as a group and have greater bargaining power with their employer
American Federation of Labor (AFL) this was a group of separte unions of skilled workers like carpenters and cigar makers
Theodore Roosevelt President who introduced laws to ensure that foods and drugs were pure fro consumers
The Jungle Book by Upton Sinclair that exposed the nasty things that were going into the meat supply in the 1800's
Imperialism This refers to the political and economic control of one area or country by another country. Example: Britain owning part of India
Nationalism This is the idea that one's nation is superior to all others
Spheres of Influence Special areas in which a country demands exclusive trading rights and other privileges
Spanish-American war Americans entered this war to defend Cuba from Spanish brutality. After the war ended the United States won control over the Philippines and Puerto Rico.
USS Maine Name of the ship that Spain was resposible for sinking-promtping the US to get involved in the Spanish American War
Open Door Policy this policy opened up trade with China
Hawaii and the Panama Canal Two areas that were annexed by the United States-These areas made it possible for US ships to refuel in the Caribbean and the Pacific
Militarism, Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, Imperialism, and Nationalism These were the Four causes of World War I
Fourteen Points Peace program proposed by Woodrow Wilson. It recommended the creation of the League of Nations
League of Nations An organization set up by the Treaty of Versailles to discourage aggression and prevent future wars.
Jim Crow Laws A system of laws in southern states during the late 1800's that segregated African Americans and forced them to use separate and inferior facilities
Treaty of Versailles Treaty with Germany that ended WWI. The treaty was especially harsh to Germany making them pay for the cost of WWI
Russian Revolution Revolution led by Vladimar Lenin that overthrew the Russian czar
