New Immigration Chapter: 4 Grew rapidly after 1890 most came from Southern and eastern Europe. Others also came from Mexico and other nations in Latin America, and Japan. Much different from Americans and even the Old Immigrants. Clothing, religion, and languages.
Old Immigration Chapter: 4 1840-1890, most people came from Northern and Western Europe, in the 1850s several thousand Chinese also came.
Push Factors Chapter: 4 Factors that pushed immigrants out of their homes. Some were poverty, lack of religious freedom, political oppression, and injustice.
Pull Factors Chapter: 4 Factors that pulled immigrants to the U.S.A. Some Europeans thought our streets were "paved with gold." A Greek street vendor's brother had written that in American "fortunes could be easily made."
Imperialism Chapter: 5 Larger or stronger nations governing weaker nations or colonies. This appealed to many Americans. America had made itself into a powerful nation.
Tariff Chapter: 5 A tax on goods brought into a country for sale. Hawaii had a treaty allowing them to sell their sugar cane in the United States without a Tariff.
Annexation Chapter: 5 The United States would take control of Hawaii. President Grover Cleveland refused. The planters declared Hawaii a republic. President McKinley, supported imperialism, annexed Hawaii in 1898.
Yellow Press Chapter: 5 Was the name giving to newspapers that fed Americans' concern over the Cuban revolution. They sensationalized the news. The "New York World" and "New York Journal" reported vivid headlines and terrible conditions in the Cuban camps where almost half died.
Front Chapter: 5 A war font was a battle zone. The Caribbean and Philippine islands in the Pacific ocean were the two fronts for the Spanish-American war.
Guerrilla War Chapter: 5 It was a war without a formal plan or type of organization, it lasted till 1901, when Aguinaldo was captured. Philippines did not gain independence until 1946.
Panama Canal Chapter: 5 It was a new way by water to get from the Caribbean to the Pacific. The United States made a canal across the isthmus of Panama.
Isthmus Chapter: 5 An a narrow strip of land joining two larger bodies of land.
Progressive Movement Chapter: 6 *Improved life during industrialization. *Improved morality among people. *Created Economic reform-control business and government. *Foster efficiency-Henry Ford.
Suffragist Chapter: 6 One who tries to gain the right to vote.
Assimilation Chapter: 6 Absorption of one cultural group into another.
Prohibition Chapter: 6 *18th Amendment-1919 illegal to manufacture, sell and transport alcohol. *Rum runners *Lots of corruption, many politicians owned the saloons or used alcohol to gain votes and money.
Muckraker Chapter: 6 *Investigative reporters. *Wrote about wrong doings in business and government. *President Teddy Roosevelt called them muckrakers because they uncovered ugly aspects of life. *They helped develop the FDA (Food and Drug Administration).
Teddy Roosevelt Chapter: 6 *trustbuster-improve business practices break up bad trusts. *Prosecuted 45 antitrust cases seven years *Square Deal-agreement fair on both sides *Conservation-save environment established the Forest Service 1905 *Sherman antitrust act-trusts illegal
William Howard Taft Chapter: 6 *Did not continue Roosevelt's policies *Aksi prosecuted antitrust cases-double the amount in four years. *Much more cautious and due to a split vote the next president is Woodrow Wilson.
Woodrow Wilson Chapter: 6 *Opposed big business and government *Lower tariffs *set up the Federal reserve-regulate banks. *Frederal Trade Commission-regulate business and trade. *Clayton Antitrust Act-had to change the same priced *More of a progressive than the other two.
Neutrality Chapter: 7 Not getting involved in other countries affairs. United States proclaimed its neutrality and did not enter WW1 until 1917.
Ethnic Group Chapter: 7 A group of people with common racial or cultural background. They did not have their own nations.
Nationalism Chapter: 7 Pride in and royalty to one's nation. It was a very strong feeling among European nations. It affected ethnic groups who did not have their own nations.
Alliance Chapter: 7 Agreements among countries. European countries formed defensive Alliances agreeing to come to one another's aid if attacked.
Three Central Powers Chapter: 7 Alliance formed by Austria-Hungry, Germany, and the Ottoman Empire.
Three Allied Powers Chapter: 7 Alliance formed by Great Britain, France, and Russia.
Mobilize Chapter: 7 The operation of resources towards a war effort. To prepare the army and navy.
Draft Chapter: 7 A system for selecting individuals to serve in the military. United States had a small army but needed a much larger one. In May 1917, congress passed the Selective Service Act. All men aged 21-30 had to register for draft 3 million men for active duty.
War Bonds Chapter: 7 War Bonds or Liberty Bonds were bought by the people back home to pay for the war. Buying one $50 Liberty Bond was enough to vaccinate 666 soldiers against typhoid.
Armistice Chapter: 7 An Agreement to temporarily suspend fighting a war. The German government asked for peace, and an armisice was signed at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month-November 11, 1918. The Treaty of Versailles officially ended the war on June 28, 1919.
National Self-Determination Chapter: 7 Allowed ethnic groups in Central Europe and Turkey to make their own nations, from Woodrow Wilson.
League of Nations Chapter: 7 Woodrow Wilson proposed a new organization designed to help nations settle disputes peacefully.
Reparations Chapter: 7 France and Great Britain wanted money, for their nations' losses in war, WW1.
Sovereignty Chapter: 7 The Ability for the United States to act on its own. United States thought by joining the League of Nations that it would be signing up to go to war every time another nation was attacked.
Treaty of Versailles Chapter: 7 *Germany accepted responsibility for the war end 1919 *Germany would pay $33 million in reparations *Germany could keep only a small army and navy *Nine new nations were created from territory taken from the Central Powers *League of Nations was creat
Fourteen Points Chapter: 7 Woodrow Wilson's "Fourteen Points" outlined a new world order based on freedom of the seas, free trade, arms reduction, and a end to secret treaties.
