| House of Burgesses | created in 1619, the 1st representative assembly in the American colonies |
| Jonh Smith | a soldier and adventurer. method- "he that will not work, shall not eat" injured in 1609 in a gunpowder explotion and returned to England |
| John Rolfe | married Pocahontas to improve relationship between Eglish colonists and the Powhatan in 1614 |
| proprietors | nobles who start colonies |
| Pilgrims | members of a group that rejected he Church of England, sailed to America, and found the Plymouth County |
| puritans | members of a group from England that settled the massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630 and sought to reform the practices of the Church of England |
| Anne Hutchinson | beleived that a person could worship God w/o the help of a church, minister or Bible, she challenged church authority |
| Mayflower Compact | an agreement established by the men who sailed to America on the Mayflower, whihc called for laws for the good of the colony and set forth the idea of self-government |
| Roger Williams | minister in Salem, MA, founded 1st Baptist Church in America. opposed force attendance @ church and the English taking Native American lands by force. |
