QuestionAnswer
The cost of the Civil War was becoming very expensive for the Union (North). The North passes a new 3% income tax on all income over $800 a year.
Abraham Lincoln was elected as the 16th President of the United States. South Carolina and six other states secede from the Union and form a new country the CSA.
Union troops were ill-prepared and not very disciplined at the Battle of Bull Run. The North dropped their weapons and ran from battle.
The South wanted to secure all of its seaports and remove all existing Union troops from Southern forts. The South fire the opening shots of the Civil War at Fort Sumter.
The South moved its capital from Montgomery, Alabama to Richmond, Virginia. The South wanted to maintain the support of Virginia throughout the war and be closer to the North’s capital.
Robert E. Lee turned down President Abraham Lincoln’s offer to lead Union troops in the Civil War. The Union (North) will struggle to find effective military leadership.
