QuestionAnswer
Why did Jews come to America in the 1800s? They came to escape economic problems and dictatorships, political issues, antisemitism.
How was life difficult for the immigrants when they first came to America? Life was difficult for immigrants because they were poor and they lived in over crowded tenements.
With what did Europeans immigrants set off with for America? A portrait of their family, valuable, and s small a amount of money.
After 1910, most immigrants came from where? They came from Southern Europe.
How were immigrants different from earlier immigrants? Earlier immigrants came from Great Britain and Germany and earlier immigrants spoke English or learned it quickly and they settled in farms or cities.
What were things that made life harder for the immigrants. Some were unskilled workers and some could not speak English.
What would you do if you had relatives in the US? They would send you money home for a trip to the US and they offered to help find housing and jobs.
What did immigrant children suffer from in the US. They suffered from racism.
What happened in 1882 and in 1917? In 1882 congress passed a law that stopped Chinese immigration and in 1917 it was voted to require immigrants to pass a reading test in English.
