Immigration to America

QuestionAnswer
From where did most immigrants come? Southern Europe, Russia, Poland, and Germany.
What language did most earlier immigrants speak? English.
Why did immigrants come to America after 1910? Economic and Politicle problems.
What languages did most immigrants speak after 1910? Italien and Yiddish.
How did relatives from the US help their families? They sent money to Europe, and helped you find a job and a home.
What did a lot of immigrants set off to the US with? Small savings and presious possessions.
What are three examples of presious possessions they took? An ancestor's wedding ring, a family portrait, and a grandmothers silver candlesticks.
Where did the immigrants live when they came to America? Overcrowded tenements in NY of Boston.
What is a tenement? A apartment block in which many families live in.
Who did the immigrants settle with? Others similer to themselves.
What kind of neighborhoods were there? Jewish and Italien.
What did many immigrant children suffer from? Racism
What is one example of racism at that time? Some Japanese were not allowed to own property.
What law did congress pass in 1882? A law that outlawed Chinese immigration.
What did congress vote on in 1917? They voted to require immigrants to pass a reading test.
What are two results of the Immigration laws? Immigration slowed down & immigrants continued to experience racism at the hands of the native-born Americans.
Where did earlier immigrants come from? GB and Germany.
Where did earlier immigrants settle? On farms.
Why were the cities crowded? So many immigrants were coming to America.
Why was there Economic problems? No jobs
Why was there Politicle Problems? Dictatorships
