Explain the Great Society The Great Society became known as legislation programs by LBJ to tackle social problems like poverty and racial discrimination
Why was LBJ able to put his Great Society programs into action? LBJ has a lot of support in congress and he won a landslide election, so he was popular with the american public
Explain how LBJ tried to tackle poverty? LBJ tried to create programs that tried to provide opportunities to take advantage of that would aim to break the poverty cycle, many of these programs aimed to improve the conditions by which the poor lived.
How did LBJ expand access to education and health care to many americans? Education- Head start preschool for children and greater funding to the states for education Health- Medicare for elderly and medicaid for the poor
Why was the success of the great society limited? the war in vietnam was costly, and caused lbj to have to cut finding to the great society program to pay for the war
For what reasons did the U.S. become involved in Vietnam to prevent the spread of communism
How did these events shape the presidents actions or policy towards the war in vietnam? Domino Theory- Eisenhower believed that if vietnam fell to communism, neighboring countries would be threatened
Gulf Of Tonkin Incident occured while lbj was president it was suspected that a US patrol boat was attacked by the North Vietnamese. LBJ saw this aggression toward US as act of war, event allowed escalation for war
Tet Offensive this was a sneak attack on major US military bases in vietnam in 1968, this this demonstrated that the war was far from being over and caused many americans to not support the war
Describe fighting in vietnam, what were the advantages and disadvantages of the U.S. forces fighting in Vietnam A: technological advancement and military might D: geography and terrain, guerilla tactics, declining/low troop morale by US soldiers
How did many Americans feel about the war? at first war was supported by most americans, mainstream media reported the war in a positive manner with respect to the purpose and progress of the war
What factors contributed to shaping their opinion? becan to decline as it seemed that the war was not being won, or will be over anytime soon there seemed to be a difference between the information that was reported by the government and what was actually occurring
How did the younger generation respond to their opposition to the war? the younger generation was not fully supportive of the war due to the fact that they were the ones who would ultimately have to fight it. Anti war demonstrations were held. College students could avoid the draft while children of blue collar familys could
How did the war impact the 1968 presidential election? The war was the big issue of the election. LBJ decided not to run for president and divisions in democratic party helped pave the way to republican candidate nixon
What was the outcome of the election? Nixon won appealing to a silent majority those who have not been active with their activism nixon promised law and order and to bring the country back together again while achieving peace with honor vietnam
What were the purposes and outcomes of Selma March? To gain support and raise awareness of the obstacles that prevented blacks from voting in Alabama
What role did TV gaining attention and awareness of the Civil Rights Movement? it projected the harsh reality into many living rooms acress the country it made people ashamed that this sort of thing was happening in the US. It helped build support for the movement
Civil Rights Act of 1964- made segregation illegal in public places
Voting Rights Act of 1965- eliminated literacy tests
24th Amendment- outlawed the poll tax
Why did Black Militant movements develop in the 1960s? Change wasn't happening fast enough movement shifted into support violence in self defense and include black power as a slogan
How did Stokely Carmichael and Malcom X hope to reach their goals? Stojley represented the new leadership of SNCC and the new direction and malcom did not support racial integration but sought help build strong black communities
Why is Shirley Chisolm important to the civil rights movement and the femenist movement of the 1960's she is the first black female of house of represenatives member and would later become a presidential candidate
How did the success of the Civil Rights movement inspire a feminist movement demostrated organizing activism and lobbying and gaining popular public support that would later lead to change
What were the goals of the feminist movement political economical and social equality for men and woman (PES)
What were the achievements and setbacks of the feminist movement? many woman entered professional careers and higher paying jobs, but still did not earn as much as men. Equal Rights ammendment passed in congress but did not get support from states
Latinos many wanted union recognition for migrant farm workers, cezar cjavez built support for many people through non violent protest and boycotts. they eventually gained unioon recognition and recieved better pay and improvements in safety
Asian Americans Japenese Americans wanted compensation for being placed in internment camps during WW 2 they filed lawsuits against the government and eventually won compesation and an apology
Native Americans wanted self government and compensation for failed polocies that left Native Americans impoverished through many confrontations new laws were passed to improve educational facilities and to address pverty issues
