| Domino Theory | Belief that if South Vietnam fell to communism, other countries in the region would follow |
| United Nations | world organization established after WW2 to provide peaceful resolutions to international conflicts |
| NATO | (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) alliance formed by the US & western European nations to fight the Soviet aggression |
| Warsaw Pact | military alliance of the Soviet Union & other communist nations in Europe |
| Satellite Nations | Nations that are dominated politically and economically by a more powerful nation (SU) |
| Marshall Plan | American plan to help European nations rebuild their economies after WW2 |
| Berlin Airlift | American & British relief effort to airlift supplies to West Berliners from 1948-1949; democratic response to the Berlin Blockade |
| Berlin Wall | Wall built by East German government in 1961 to seal off East Berlin from West Berlin |
| 38th Parallel | The dividing line between South Korea and communist North Korea |
| Superpower | Nation with the military, political, and economic strength to influence events worldwide. |
| Golf of Tonkin Resolution | Congressional resolution passed in 1964 that authorized military action in Vietnam |
| McCarthyism | Political practice of accusing people of treason or anti-government activities without having solid evidence. |
| Bay of Pigs | Failed invasion of Cuba in 1961 when a force of 1,200 Cuban exiles, backed by the US, landed at the Bay of Pigs |
| Cuban Missile Crisis | major Cold War confrontation in 1962; Soviets used Cuba as a “base” to point missiles at the US |
