Terms, People, and Events you need to know for the U.S. History AP Test.

TermDefinition
Antinomianism (Anne Hutchinson) the theological doctrine that by faith and God's grace a Christian is freed from all laws (including the moral standards of the culture).
Evangelism The spreading of the Christian gospel by public preaching or personal witness.
Indentured Servitude Indentured servitude was a form of apprenticeship or bonded (contract) labor. It provided a way for Europeans who could not afford to pay their own passage to get to America.
Joint-stock company A company whose stock is owned jointly by the shareholders.
Mercantilism an economic system (Europe in 18th century) to increase a nation's wealth by government regulation of all of the nation's commercial interests.
Middle Passage The Middle Passage refers to the forcible passage of African people from Africa to the New World, as part of the Atlantic slave trade.
Primogeniture Right of inheritance belongs exclusively to the eldest son.
Proprietary Colony A colony in which one or more private land owners retain rights that are normally the privilege of the state, and in all cases eventually became so.
Royal Colony The British Overseas Territories are fourteen territories of the United Kingdom, but which do not form part of the United Kingdom itself.
Salutary Neglect Salutary neglect was an undocumented, though long-standing British policy of avoiding strict enforcement of parliamentary laws, meant to keep the American colonies obedient to Great Britain.
Slavery in the English Colonies Blacks were brought to America by force to be slaves for the people of English Colonies. First brought to Jamestown.
Smallpox Epidemics Epidemics occurred in the North American colonies in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Tariffs A government tax on imports or exports.
Vice-Admiralty Courts (Navigation Acts) Created to resolve disputes among merchants and seamen during the French and Indian War.
