The Need to Knows

Bill of Rights Consist of the first ten amendments to the Constitution. These amendments protect individual rights such as free speech, freedom of press, and jury trails.
1st Amendment Speech, Press, religion, assembly, petition
13th Amendment Declares slavery illegal in the United States
14th Amendments Gives citizenship rights to all people born or naturalized in the U.S.(i.e. former slaves) and states that citizens cannot be "deprived of life, liberty, or property with out due process of the law."
15 Amendments Prohibits the use of race or previous condition of slavery as a barrier to voting. This applied to male citizens over the age of 21.
16th Amendment Creates the Federal Income Tax provision. This was an amendment strongly supported by the Progressives
17th Amendment Provides the direct election of senators, another amendment supported by Progressives
19th Amendment Provides women the right to vote (woman's suffrage)
24th Amendment Eliminated the poll tax as a requirement to vote in primary elections for federal and state officials. Part of the Civil Rights legislations of 1964.
26th Amendment Extends the right to vote to 18-years-olds.
