What was the major route settlers took to get to the west during the early 1800s? The Oregon Trail.
Why were the Great Plains nicknamed the "great American Dessert?" There were only a few trees along the riverbank and it was very hot.
Describe 3 hardships about crossing the plains. Heat, quicksand and few trees for firewood.
Describe 3 hardships about crossing the mountains. It was steep. They had to use ropes to help get up and it was very cold.
What were buffalo chips and what were they used for? It was buffalo poop and it was used for firewood.
Why was Independence Rock an important spot along the trail? If they got there before the the 4th of July they knew they would be able to get across the mountains before winter.
Why did many Americans start moving to Texas in the early 1800s? They got more land so people could start farming.
Why did Mexico pass a law forbidding anymore Americans from moving to Texas? They were afraid that they would take over and Texas and make it apart of the US.
Why didn't the Americans that moved Texas care about Mexico's restrictive laws. They were given land when they moved to Texas.
Who was Santa Anna? A Mexican dictator.
What was Santa Anna trying to do? He tried to force Americans out of Texas.
Who is Sam Houston? Commander of the army in Texas.
What was Sam Houston trying to do? He lead the Texan army in the new nation of the Republic or Texas.
What happened at the Alamo? There were 150 Texans and 6,000 Mexicans. The Mexicans defeated the Texans and they refused to surrender. When they called for help only 40 people came.
What happened to Texas after Houston's troops defeated Santa Anna? Texas was granted it's independence.
What is annexation? To add land onto a country like the south wanted to do with Texas.
What section of the US was most opposed to annexing Texas and why? The people in the north were opposed because there was slavery allowed in Texas.
What section of the US was most supportive of annexing Texas and why? The south because they had slavery and there was more land.
What is a dark horse candidate? It is unknown- when someone comes from no where.
Who became our 11th president after winning the election of 1844? James K. Polk
Why was our 11th president called "young hickory?" He was just like Andrew Jackson and he was called "old hickory."
Why was our 11th president considered very successful? He had 5 main goals and he accomplished all of them in one term.
What was manifest destiny? It was a belief that god intended that the US owned the land between the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean.
What two countries both claimed the Oregon Territory? Britain and the US
What was it meant by fifty-four forty or fight? The territory of Oregon would belong to the US all the way to it's northern border- 54 degrees40N.
Explain how the border dispute over Oregon was solved? It was set 49 degrees north latitude, like it is still set today.
What caused the Mexican War? There was a border dispute between Mexicans and the US.
Why didn't Americans care about what the Mexicans or Indians wanted? The Americans were prejudice.
Why did the US go to war with Mexico but not with Britain over Oregon? We didn't want to through another long war with Britain.
What was the treaty called that ended the Mexican War? The Treaty of Guad Alup-hidalgo.
What lands did the US receive is the Mexican cession? California and New Mexico.
How much did the US have to pay for the Mexican cession? 15 million.
What was the Gadsden Purchase? We needed pay 10 million to connect railroads between Texas and California.
What was Joseph Smith? He founded the Mormons.
What is the full name of the Mormon religion? The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
What does polygamy mean? To marry more than one wife.
What happened to Joseph Smith and why? He got arrested and shot for his belief of polygamy.
Who was Brigham Young? The new leader of the Mormons.
Where did the Mormons eventually settle? The Great Salt Lake Valley- Utah
Why did Brigham Young choose that location? He thought it was a "promised land."
What state was added to the union in 1896 at the request of the Mormons? Utah
Why did Sutter's Mill become famous in 1848? Sutter's Mill was where they found gold.
Who was James Marshall? He found gold on January 24th 1848.
What was the nick-name given to the prospectors who moved to California? forty-niners (gold seekers)
What did most settlers that moved to CA find there? dirt
