What are the three branches of government? legislative, executive, judicial
Who makes up the legislative branch and what is their job? Congress and to make laws
Who makes up the Executive branch and what is their job? President, Vice president, and cabinet and they enforce laws
Who makes up the judicial branch and what is their job? Supreme court and Federal Courts and they interpret the laws
What is popular sovereignty? people are the primary source of government authority (we the people)
What is limited governemnt? government only has power that the constitution gives it
What is seperation of powers? limits the power of governmnet, seperates the powers into jobs of the three branches
What is checks and balances? each branch has power to check the other so no one abuses their power
What is federalism? the division of power between the federal government and the states (10th amendment)
What is republicanism? citizens elect people to carry out their wants
What are individual rights? laws that protect the individual rights like freedom of speech (Bill of Rights)
What are the six goals of a government? form a perfect union, equality, peace, common defense,general welfare,citizens rights
Where was the constitutional convention? Philadelphia
What did people want to do at the convention? they wanted to revise the articles of confederation
Who attended the convention? 55 delegates from 12 states (rhode island did not show)
What was the Virginia Plan? A new strong central goverment with three branches of government
What was the New Jersey plan? Congress should be able to raise taxes and regulate trade and small states wanted equal representation in the legislature
What was the great compromise? Each side gives up something- house of reps based on population and senate gets 2 seats per state
What was the debate over slavery between the southern and northern states? Southern states wanted slaves to be calculated in population, northerners wanted to stop slave trade
What is economic depression? a period when business activity slows, prices and wages drop, unemployment rises
What was Shays rebellion? An uprising of Mass. farmers that led to forming of a stronger central government
What was the Northwest Ordinance of 1787? Congress stated that basic rates would be given to anyone who settled north of the Ohio river and they also banned Slavery there
What was the problem with the Articles of confederation? Each state had their own form of economics (money,trade, no ability for central government to tax so there was no money to run the government. The seperation of states made US appear weak to other nations.
What did the weak Articles of Conferation lead to? lead to economic depression, rebellions, and a need for a strong centralized governement

Who wrote the great compromise? Roger Sherman

Why were the Bill of Rights added to the constitution? To give people individual rights such as Freedom of speech and the right to bear arms
