In the early 1800s, New Mexico, included present day New MExico, Arizona, Nevada, and parts of Colorado and Utah.
The Santa Fe Trail started in Missouri and crossed the praries to the Arkansas River to the Rocky Mountains the turned south to the New Mexico Territory.
As trade increased with New Mexico settlers began settling in that region.
Manifest Destiny included the New Mexico region.
The mission system was a part of Spain's plan to colonize California.
Spanish Explorers and missionaries from Mexico had been the first Europeans to settle in California.
The Spainish used the missions to convert the Native Americans to Christianity.
Mexican settlers in 1833 bought California land and built huge properties called ranchos.
Rancheros were ranch owners that treated Native American workers like slaves.
American travelers wrote that California was abundant and made Americans want to annex it even more.
The US wanted America to own California so America would be safely bordered by the sea and not a foreign power.
In June 1846, a small group of Americans seized Sonoma and proclaimed the independent Republic of California.
