Stamp Act an act passed by Great Britian in 1765 that placed taxes on newspapers and paper sold in 13 colonies
Patriot A colonist who is opposed to British rule; people who wanted independence.
Loyalist A colonist who remained loyal to Great Britain during the American Revolution.
Militia A group of volunteers who fought in an emergency during the colonial period in the American Revolution.
Revolution The overthrow of the government; the colonist's fight for freedom.
Delegate A person chosen to represent a group.
Continental Congress A group of colonists who first met in Philadelphia in 1774 to discuss how the colonists should deal with Great Britain.
Retreat to turn back.
Surrender to give up.
Treaty A formal agreement between nations.
Traitor someone who acts against his or her own country.
What was the Boston Tea Party and why did the colonists do it? The colonists dressed as Native Americans and dumped 342 chests of British Tea into the Boston and New York Harbors because they were mad about the taxes on the tea.
Where did colonists get their idea for a new government? Based on the British Parliament.
What is the difference between patriots and loyalists? A patriot wants independence from Britain and a loyalist did not want independence from Britain
Who is Benedict Arnold A man who wanted to be America's most famous traitor; he planned to surrender West Point (an important American fortress), but the plan was discovered by the patriots.
Why was New York such an important location during the American Revolution? It has fine waterways, separated the Northern and Southern colonies, and it was a wealthy colony.
What did the British do at first to make the colonists so angry? In 1765, the British Government passed the Stamp Act and the colonists could not vote for the British Parliament.
How were the American soldiers able to defeat the British? They had assistance from the Spanish and the French, most importantly French military aid and French ships.
Name 10 battles Saratoga, Concord, Yorktown, Oriskany Creek, French/Indian War, Danbury, American Revolution, Long Island, Lexington, White Plains.
