New Jersey Plan The plan put forth by the small states to counter the Virginia plan which the small states felt they gave up to much power to the larger states. The NJ Plan called for a one house legislature in which each state would have only one vote.
Virginia Plan Madison and the Virginian's plan that included many parts that were eventually written in the constitution ad. The VA plan called for a strong national government,3 branches, 2-house legislature in which representation depended on a state's population.
Great Compromise The name given to the plan proposed by Roger Sherman and adopted by the constitutional convention of a 2-house legislature: the lower house would have representation based upon population and in the upper house each state would have 2 senators.
Federalism The sharing of power between federal and state governments.
Legislative Branch The branch of government that makes the nation's laws. Headed by Congress.
Executive Branch The branch of government, headed by the President that carries out the laws and policies.
Judicial Branch The branch of government, including the federal court system, that interprets the nation's laws. Headed by the Supreme Court.
Electoral College A special group of voters selected by their state legislature to vote for the president and vice-president. A candidate needs 270 electoral votes to win a presidential election.
Checks and Balances The system in which each branch of government has a check on the other two branches so that no one branch becomes too powerful.
