US History Civil Rights - Slavery Terms

QuestionAnswer
Discrimination Judgement based on a persons race, group, skin color, religion, etc.
Prejudice A opion of someone or something that is either nice or mean
Racism Discrimination of someone based on the color of their skin
Plantation A sizeable field where crops are grown
Indentured Servants A slave who was brought to America to work for someone for a period of time
"Middle Passage" When a ship full of slaves delivered them to America
Extended Family Someone or a group of people you consider family that live with you
"Roots" A story written by Alex Haley about slave life
Triangular Trade When a British ship would take goods from Europe to Africa were they would then trade for slaves and they then would load the slaves and travel to America and would sell off the slaves and then return back to home in Europe
Slave Auction Where slaves were sold to white men owning plantations
Cotton Gin Machine created by former slave Eli Whitney that took the seeds of cotton
Slave Codes Laws that were given to the slaves on a plantation and they must abide by them
Underground Railroad A system were slaves would escape slavery and earn freedom illegally
Abolition Against slavery
Jim Crow State and local laws
Segregation Seperation between states or countries or groups of people
Brown vs. Board of Education Declared that the law to teach black and whites at different schools was unconstitutional
SCLC Southern Christian Leadership Conference - American civil rights group - first president Martin Luther King
