What were the disadvantages of farming in the middle ages? land use was inefficient and farmers didn't experiment with new farming methods
what forced people of the middle ages to change their farming methods? their population was growing so they needed more food and the french blockade made it so their is no corn
what was the enclosure movement? a movement where wealthy landlords forced in common pastures and experimented with new farming methods
what was an effect of the enclosure movement? villages lost their commonlands and poitical power so peasants became poorer
what is crop rotation? fields that were depleated of nutrients by one crop but were replenished by planting different crops
what is capitalism? a new economic system based on supply and demand
what is the cottage industry? where merchants acted as coordinators between buyers and sellers while various groups of skilled rural workers manufactured cotton and woolen cloth
what are textiles? fabric or cloth woven from cloth or thread
what were three of the roles a merchant had? supplied materials,took supplies from spinning cottage to weaving cottage to dying cottage, sell finished item for more than spent on it
what is capitalism based on? a private ownership, free competition, and profit
what three machines improved spinning? spinning jenny, waterframe, and spinning mule
how does the steam engine work? steam is forced from high to low pressure and produces power
who invented the steam engine in 1765? james watt
what were factory machinery, farming tools, and railways made of? iron
what was the effect of iron and coal production? britain produced more iron than all other countries combined
what was the need for better transportation? pre-industrial society used horses, mules, and dirt roads
what was built in effect of better transportation? stone and eventually asphault roads were built, canals were built, railroads were built
what was some effects of railroads? were expanded rapidly throughout britain, cheaper form of transportation than horses,increased population
why did britain leed industrial revolution? perfect climate, plenty of natural resources such as iron and coal, seperation from european countries kept them from war
