popular sovereignty This principle of government states that political power rests with the people. This power is expressed by voting and free participation in government.

limited government basic principle of American government which states that government is restricted in what it may do, and each individual has rights that government cannot take away
separation of powers Constitutional division of powers among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches, with the legislative branch making law, the executive applying and enforcing the law, and the judiciary interpreting the law
checks and balances Constitutional division of powers among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches, with the legislative branch making law, the executive applying and enforcing the law, and the judiciary interpreting the law
federalism the sharing of power between federal and state governments
preamble an introduction to a speech or piece of writing
domestic of concern to or concerning the internal affairs of a nation; example: unemployment, crime, transportation
infrastructure the basic support systems needed to keep an economy going, including power, communications, transportation, water, sanitation, and education systems
veto refusal to sign a bill or resolution
State of the Union President's address to Congress in January each year; gives the state (conditions) of the country and makes legislative proposal for the coming session of Congress
electors members of a party chosen in each state to formally elect the president and vice president (members of the electoral college)
impeachment the process of accusing a public official of wrongdoing
term of office a limited period of time during which an elected official serves the public
revenue government income
due process the principle that a government must respect all of an individual's legal rights instead of just some or most of them when the government deprives a person of life, liberty, or property.
naturalization the legal process by which a person is granted citizenship
appropriation money set aside (as by a legislature) for a specific purpose
filibuster an attempt to defeat a bill in the senate by talking indefinitely, thus preventing the senate from taking action to the bill
amendment a change in, or addition to, a constitution or law
ex post facto "after the fact." An ex post facto law is one which makes a particular act illegal, and punishes people who committed that crime before the law was passed, i.e., when the act was legal.
reprieve postponement or cancelation of a punishment
suffrage the right to vote
bill a proposed law
posterity future generations; those who come after
