One of the last acts passed by John Adams, under which he appointed many new Federalist judges who would keep the Republicans in check during Jefferson's term. Judiciary Act of 1801
Federalist Chief Justice appointed by John Adams. He served for over 30 years, strengthening the federal courts, listening to important cases, and making important decisions. John Marshall
One of the more important cases brought to John Marshall. Marbury sued Madison for not giving him the job of justice of peace. Decided in Madison's favor, but helped establish the principle of judicial review. Marbury v. Madison
Contradicting the Constitution. unconstitutional
Concept that states the Supreme Court has final say in interpreting the Constitution. If a law is deemed unconstitutional, it cannot be put into effect. judicial review
Lucky purchase of land offered to the US by Napoleon of France. The land was purchased at three cents per acre and doubled the size of the US. Louisiana Purchase
Young officer who was appointed by Jefferson to lead an expedition west into the Louisiana Territory. His notes, along with his partner's, provided important information about the new territory that had been purchased. Meriwether Lewis
Friend of Meriwether Lewis, who accompanied him on the expedition west. He was a skilled mapmaker, leader, and outdoorsman. His slave York joined him on the journey. William Clark
Expedition that explored the northern part of the Louisiana Territory. The information from the expedition about the land proved valuable. Lewis and Clark expedition
Shoshone woman who eventually joined the Lewis and Clark expedition. Her knowledge of geography and language skills were valuable during the journey, especially when they reached Shoshone lands. Sacagawea
Leader of an expedition that explored the Great Plains and southern Lousiana Territory. Though he was captured by Spanish troops and was unable to find the source of the Red River, his descriptions of the places he explored were valuable. Zebulon Pike
Kidnapping. impressment
Act passed in response to British attacks on ships. The act banned US ships from sailing to foreign ports, but eventually failed. Embargo Act of 1807
Shawnee chief who vowed to stop losing Native American land. He attempted to unite the Native Americans, and somewhat succeded. However, his efforts ultimately failed and he was killed in the Battle of the Thames. Tecumseh
Westerner who wanted war with Britain. War Hawk
Officer who took control of several infant ships. He participated in a naval battle against the British, where he urged his men not to give up the ship, and won. Oliver Hazard Perry
General Harrison pursued the British into Canada and defeated them during this battle. It ended British threats in the Northwest. Battle of the Thames
Washington lawyer who watched an all-night battle between the US and the British. After seeing the US flag still waving through the night, he was so proud he wrote the Star-Spangled Banner. Francis Scott Key
Treaty which ended the War of 1812. It showed that there was no real winner from the war. Treaty of Ghent
President during the War of 1812. Tried to solve the problem of the British blockade by banning trade with France and Britain, but failed. James Madison
