The states divided power because they did not want anyone branch to be too powerful.
The states divided power between two-houses (or branches).
In May 1776, the Americas were busy forming their own governments.
States political powers to were not to be abused.
To vote you had to be free, 21 years old, and mostly only whites got to vote but a few states allowed black males to vote.
The Second Continental drafted the Articles of Confederation in Nov. 1777.
The federal government was given the power to handle relations with other countries, establish an army, and borrow money.
Issuing currency of was the job of the federal government too.
Federal government could not tax the states.
The Confederation of Congress became the United States on March 1, 1781.
To change the Articles required the agreement of all 13 states.
New laws added to the Articles required 9 of the 13 states.
Land had to be bought, divided, have a population of 60,000, and petition for statehood before it could become a state.
The Confederation had trouble after the war with the economy because of no power to tax, depriciated money, and not being allowed to trade.
depression a period of slow economic activity and increased unemployment.
manumission the freeing of an enslaved person.
Compromise to give up something you want in order to get something else.
America was in a depression after the Revolutionary War, partly because of the large bill we had run up to fight the war.
Shay's Rebellion was caused by angry farmers that were upset with the government for taking farmers land and putting them in jail.
Citizens wanted the government to help the people in debt.
Southern states relied on slaves to do the work on their plantations.
Alexander Hamilton proposed a meeting of voting delgates to discuss trade issues and consider changing the Articles of confederation.
James Madison was the autor of the plan of the government so he was know as "Father of the Consttution."
The Virginia Plan proposed a strong national government with a proportional number of delegates to both the upper and lower house.
The Virginia Plan would give larger states more power than smaller states.
The Virginia plan would also have a chief executive officer and a court system.
The 3/5 compromise was used to count black people for reprsentation and taxation.
The Great Compromise also stated that after 20 years Congress could limit the slave trade if it chose to.
The Federal government has a constitution that was the final authority in any dispute.
The legislative branch makes our laws.
The executive branch is headed by the president, carries out the laws and policies of our countries.
The president is the commander in chief for the armed forces.
The judicial branch enforces the laws made by congress and gives the Supreme court the final authority.
A system of checks and balances keeps one government branch from having to much power.
The president can veto a bill, but Congress can override the veto by a two-thirds majority vote.
Federalist wanted more federal control and were afraid of the caos and was without it.
Antifederalist wanted more control for the state to prevent losing their freedom.
federalism sharing power between federal and state governments.
The judicial branch is the court system that enforces laws.
The executive branch is the branch of government headed by the president that carries out laws and policies.
The lesgisltive branch is the law making branch of the government.
Antifederalist opposed the new constitution because they were afraid of the government having to much control.
The federal and state government both have the power to tax.
