What was Andrew Johnson's background? A self-taught tailor, southerner from Tennessee, former democrat republican, former slave owner, "provincial and bigoted", hated the white planter aristocracy of the south, chosen by Abe to run as Vice Pres. in 1864 to get votes.
What was Andrew Johnson's Reconstruction plan? It was carried out during 8 months when congress was not in session.
What was the Southern response to the elections and Black Codes? violence- Southern whites passed these laws because they feared black political influence,Wealthy southern landowners, for their part, supported the black codes because the codes ensured that they would have a stable and reliable black workforce
Who was Charles Sumner? Senator- radical republican opposed Abe's Reconstruction plan as too lenient
Who was Thaddeus Stevens? Representative- radical republican opposed Abe's Reconstruction plan as too lenient
What were the goals of the Radical Republicans? Revenge on south, protect right of freedom, want power and control

What were the results of 1866 "off-year" elections? Huge Gains in congress for radicals- who now have all the power.
What does "swing around the circle" mean? placed the blame on Radical Republicans in Congress during his infamous “Swing Around the Circle,” speech in which he traveled throughout the country giving speeches that lambasted Republicans, pro-war Democrats, and blacks
What was the Command of the Army Act? all presidential orders go through the general of the Army
What was the Military Reconstruction Act? South was divided into 5 military districts -Federal troops to enforce laws and keep order
What is the Tenure of Office Act? President can't fire cabinet member without congressioanl approval
Why did President Johnson fire Edwin Stanton? he was a radial republican spy violated dthe Tenure office act
The Articles of Impeachment in the House of Representatives were passed with 126-47 votes- needed majority
How was the trial? What was the vote? and did Johnson keep his job? the trial was a huge event that lasted for 5 weeks. 35 vote quality, 12 democrats vote not guilty, 7 radical republicans vote not guilty 35-19 vote, yes he keeps his job.
Why did the 7 republicans vote not guilty? bad press, had enemies, political pay-offs
What was Johnson's last act in office? pardons Jefferson Davis
What was the Republican record in the south? republican rule? Republicans cast 2449 votes, made up of mostly blacks and federal officials.
What is the 15th ammendment and were women included? the right to vote shall not be denied on account of race.
What was the Union League? every black male in South Carolina joined, 90% black males voted almost entirely for republicans. hundreds of freedmen in writing new state constitution, some were elected to goverment positions.
What were the 3 groups that made-up the Radical Republican Reconstruction in the South? Freedmen, White Northerners/carpetbaggers, White Southerners/ Scalliwags.
How did the Conservative White Democrats regain power? Ku Klux Klan- 1) attack freedmen and white republicans 2) intimidate 3) Terror wing of Dem.l Party

Who was in the election of 1876? What happened? US Grant tried to run a third term, there was alot of propaganda, corruption of Grant Administration and the continuing depression.
