Patriots Americans who believed that the colonies had the right to govern themselves.
Loyalists Americans who felt deep loyalty to Britain
French and Indian war had what affect on Britain? It left them in great debt. They placed new taxes on the colonists to try and recover.
malitia a small army made up of ordinary citizens who are available to fight in an emergency.
What caused the French and Indian War? Britain and France both claimed land in the Ohio Valley.
Why was it called the French and Indian War? Indians sided with France against Britain
How long did it last and who won? 7 years, Britain won. It won after the British captured Canada. France signed a treaty to give it to them. Big win for the British.
Who led the British in the first battle of the French and Indian War? George Washington
tyrannay The unjust use of government power. A ruler who uses power in this way is called a tyrant.
What did the Procolomation of 1763 do? King George III made this proclomation, draw a line down Appalachian Mtn Range. Indians stay to the west, colonists to the east.
Why were colonists upset about Procolomation of 1763? Som settlers were already west of the line and there was little room to the east. Felt it was unujust, tyranny.
Stamp Act Law requiring colonists to buy a stamp for every peice of paper they used.
Why did colonists feel Stamp Act was unfair? They had no say-so in Parliament to decide this. They would have agreed if it were from their own assembly.
Who were the "Sons of Liberty" A name a mob gave themselves that attached tax collects, even in thier own homes.

Quartering Act Law ordering colonists to provide quarters (or housing) for soldiers. Included candles, salt, vinegar, bedding, ...
Townshend Act New law placing taxes on common goods imported from Britain (glass, paper, paint, tea)
Who led the opposition to the Townshend Act, by leading protests and sending a letters to all colonies telling them this was a violation. Samuel Adams
boycott (1) To refuse to buy one or more good from a certain source. (2) an organized refusal by many people.
What happened to the Townshend acts and why? All *but* the tax on tea was repealed because the tax brought in very little money and the boycott caused merchants to lose a lot!
massacre the killing of defenseless people
Boston Massacre Fight in Boston between soldiers and colonists that 5 dead and 10 injured.
Why were British troops tried for murder? While fighting off a mob, one soldier was knocked to the ground and the troops began to fire.
Who defended these troops and did he win? John Adams, a patriot, defended them and 5 were freed and 2 were only charged with manslaughter (they didn't mean to kill...much less than murder). Argued it was self defense.
Was John Adams related to Samual Adams? Yes, they were cousins.
The Tea Act Lowered the cost of British East Indian Company tea to lower than even the smuggled Dutch tea.
Boston Tea Party When Patriots, disguised as Native Americans, threw 342 chests of tea in to the Boston Harbor.
Intolerable Acts King made these in response to Boston Tea Party
First Intolerable Act Boston Harbor would be closed to all shipping until the tea was paid for.
Second Intolerable Act Placed Boston under British control.
Third Intolerable Act Soldiers accused of murder would be tried in Britain.
Continental Congress 50 leaders from 12 colonies meet to talk about Intolerable Acts. Sent a letter to King George and organized a new boycott.
General Gage King George's commander of British troops in America.
What happened between Genera Gage and his troops at Lexington? When General Gage tried to capture weapons and gun powder from Concord, they were met in Lexington (village on the way) by Minutemen (Patriots). (The British are coming! - Paul Revere.
Who was killed at Lexington? The Patriots.
What happened to General Gage after first battle at Lexington? He declared victory and marched on to Concord.
Did the British find weapons and gunpowder in Concord? No, the Patriots had moved it.
What battle occurred in Concord and who won? Big victory for the Patriots. The British started a fire outside of town and the Patriots (a malitia) decided to fight them rather than have Boston burned. British retreated and were fired on the entire way. 74 dead, 200 wounded.
