Why did slavery flourish in the Southern colonies as opposed to the New England colonies? Slaves provided relatively cheap and abundant source of labor for the Chesapeake tobacco planters. In contrast, the New England colonies were more industrialized, so they did not require the use of slaves to work large plantations.
