king james called the tabacco stinking weed he also said that it was bad for your lungs brain and nose yrs. later we realized he's right
needed workers indentured servents, worked for 5-7 yrs. then were free, get to own land, worked to pay for their trip to jamestown
some servents were from africa
anthony johnson was an african american who went to jamestown to work and pay off his debt now owns more than 250 acres of land on the pungoteague r.
by 1661 (the indentured servents) many african american's life changed they were enslaved and forced to work on farms
2 other major changes were sent woman to the colony the trip was payed by the rich about to be husbands and the house of burgesses met they made laws for the colony represented white landowners this was their first step to self goverment
john rolphe married pocahontas
they kept peace because pocahontas's dad was chief powhatan's daughter
how did growth bring problems planters were taking more and more land to plant tabacco and more and more hunting grounds from the native americans
after pocahontas died chief powhatan's brother became the new the new powhatan adn he wanted the english to leave and attacked about 350 co. were killed a huge battle took place this was one of the last battles
what change in government happened king james took over the government of Virginia he didn't like the governing themselves and named a governer of the colony he wanted control colonists don't like king james to control them and they didn't want to obey the laws from england
jamestown was the first permanant eng. settlement
