Ellis Island an immigration inspection check point. This made sure immigrants would benfit americans. Major european checkpoint.
Angel Island Asian immigrant inspection checkpoint. Very harsh people did the questioning. chinese people did not feel welcome and felt like the place was a prison.
Chinese Exculsion Act Banned all chinese immigration for ten years.This limited the # of chinese immigration in the U.S
Gentleman's Agreement limited the number of Japenese immigration to the U.S.
Culture Shock The confusion and anixety that result from living in an unfamilar place. This caused immigrants to find it harder to adapt.
Old Immigrants the old immigrants would go thru tests at a check point. they would suffer a hard trip over to america. they found it hard to fit in and were forced my americans to adopt their traditions.
New immigrants Today immigrants travel comfortably on an airplane. They do not have to adopt american traditions.you do not have to take an exam when you enter. you can become a permanet citizen.
Americanization movement program of education for immigrants to learn about the ways of america. Americans Felt threatned and turned to hostile the measures.
nativism Fear of foriegn born. violent actions toward immigrants.
Dumbell Tenement Long six story building built to help solve ventalation problems in urban homes. these didnt work and became a very bad place to live.
Row Homes Single family dwellings that shared side walls W/ other similar houses. Built to solve urban housing problems.
Political Machines Organized group that controlled the activities of a political party and offered services in return. many political bosses fell to greed and corruption.
William Marcy Tweed earliest and most powerfull boss. soon was sentenced to jail on many counts of fraud.
Tammany Hall powerfull democratic machine that was filled w fraud.
Role of the Political bosses controlled municipal jobs. served like a mayor. solve problems but became very powerful and greedy.
Thomas Nast political cartoonist who helped catch tweed
social gospel movement preached salvation thru service to the poor. inspired some to erect churches and some employers to be nicer to their employees
Jane Adams heled found the hull house. she also prevented certain children from becoming criminals
Vaudville performances including dancing song slapstick comedy and chorus lines
urban problems housing sanitation transportation fire crime water
strike work stoppage intended to force an employer to respond to demands led to violence and they sometimes got what they wanted
closed shop a company that hires only union members
Open shop a company whose workers are hired without regard to their membership in a labor union
Arbritation a person who helps solve a disput between workers and the management
melting pot theory everyone is going to assimilate and form one american identity
salad bowl theory every one mixes together to form one american identity but practices their own cultures at home
