| Abolitionist | people who wanted to abolish (get rid of) slavery |
| Artillery | cannons and other large weapons |
| Blockade runner | low-lying steamships painted gray to match ocean and fool pursuers to slip in/out of Capes and through blockades |
| Blue coats / gray coats | Union soldiers / Confederate soldiers |
| Cavalry | troops on horseback |
| Confederate States of America | states that left the Union to form their own gov’t (VA, NC, SC, GA,FL,TN,AL, MS, LA, AR, TX) |
| Conscription | made to join an army |
| Emancipate | to free |
| Fugitives | slaves who runaway or try to escape |
| Guerrillas | fighters who make hit-and-run attacks |
| Infantry | Group of men fighting on FOOT! |
| Manumission | act of releasing someone from slavery |
| Pickets | Guards who stood on the outskirts of a military camp |
| Plantation | Large estate farmed by many workers (slaves) |
| Rebels/Secesh | Confederate soldiers and sympathizers |
| Secession (secede) | To withdraw or leave |
| Sectionalism | loyalty to one's regions' interest |
| Slavery | The system of one person "owning" another |
| Underground railroad | system and path of safe houses used to help slaves escape north |
| Union | The United States; the northern states during the Civil War |
