| Open Door Policy | US policy in 1899 that opened up all the spheres of influence in China to all nations to trade; the Chinese were angry because they had no say |
| Great White Fleet | name for the steam-powered ships of the enlarged and modernized American navy of the early 1900s |
| Monroe Doctrine | Presidents Monroe’s foreign policy statement that warned European nations to stay out of Latin America |
| Sphere of Influence | area where a nation has special trading influences |
