Preamble The opening statement of the Constitution.
Constitution's 6 Goals Form a More Perfect union, Establish Justice, Ensure Domestic Tranquility, Provide Common for Defense, Promote General Welfare, and Secure Blessings of Liberty.
Domestic Tranquility Peace and order at home.
Civilian Nonmilitary.
General Welfare The well being of all citizens.
Liberty Freedom.
Articles The main body of the Constitution (Divided into 7 sections)
7 Basic Principals Popular Sovereignty, Limited Government, Separation of Powers, Checks and Powers, Federalism, Republicanism, and Individual Rights.
Popular Sovereignty The people have the right to alter or abolish their government.
Limited Government The government has only the powers the constitution gives it.
Checks and Balances Each branch of government has the power to check, or limit, the actions of the other two.
Federalism Division of power between the federal government and the sates.
Bills Law Proposals
Appeal Ask the decision be reviewed by a higher court.
Unconstitutional Not allowed under the Constitution.
Two ways to Propose and Amendment 1. Proposed by 2/3 of both House and Senate. 2. National convention called by congress at the reqest if 2/3 state legislatures.
Two ways to Approve and Amendment 1. Approved by legislatures of 3/4 sates 2. Approved by special conventions in 3/4 states.
First Amendment Freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition.
2nd Amendment Right to Bear Arms
3rd Amendment Freedom of Taking in Troops.
4th Amendment Right against unreasonable search and seizure.
5th Amendment Rights of the accused.
6th Amendment Right to speedy trial by jury.
7th Amendment Jury trial in civil cases.
8th Amendment No excessive bail on unusual punishment.
9th Amendment Powers Reserved to the People.
10th Amendment Powers reserved to states.
Civil War Amendments 13 Abolishes Slavery, 14 Guarantees citizenship to former slaves, 15 no racism
19th Amendment Women's right to vote.
26th Amendment Voting age from 21-18
Constitutional Initiative Sponsors of an amendment gather signatures on a petition.
Citizen a person who owes loyalty to a particular nation and is entitled to all its rights and protections.
Naturalized To complete official legal process of becoming a citizen.
Responsibilities of a Citizen Voting, Obeying the Laws,Defending the Nation, Serving on a Jury,Serving the Community, and Being Informed.
