What are the colonies that make up the Southern Colonies? Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia
Who were the men who developed the Mason-Dixon line, and why was it developed? Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon; it was developed to settle the dispute over the boundary between Pennsylvania and Maryland
What conditions in the Southern Colonies favored the development of a plantation economy? The climate of the Southern Colonies was warm + humid, providing long growing seasons suitable for crops such as tobacco and rice; large farms required lots of workers, spurred development of slavery in colonies
What was the main cause of Bacon's Rebellion? Wealthy planters took all land along coast, poorer colonists compelled to move inland to find own land to be able to vote + not have to work for wealthy planters; uprise of violence between Indians/colonists over land, governor won't help
Why didn't the governor want to help the frontier farmers in Virginia? Governor wanted to avoid open war w/ Indians, since he benefited from their fur trade
Who was Nathaniel Bacon? Organizer and leader of Bacon's Rebellion, which was a group of frontier farmers that attacked/killed Indians in 1675, governor declared this group to be rebels, group reacted by burning Jamestown; all ended when Bacon died
Who benefited from Maryland’s toleration? Adult male Christians benefited from the Act of Toleration; gave them right to vote + hold offices
Why did Oglethorpe and the other founders establish the colony of Georgia? Georgia bottled up the Spanish in Florida, and provided protection for English debtors from harsh jail conditions (Oglethorpe had a debtor friend that died while being kept in captivity)
How did people live in the backcountry? Ppl often didn't legally own farmland, lived in 1-room shacks, both men and women worked the fields, families didn't have slaves, didn't care about rank, and thought the gov't only cared about wealthy plantation owners in Tidewater region.
