Labor and Industry

Vocabulary - Social Studies grade 8

QuestionAnswer
Labor Union a group of workers joined together to improve their conditions
Management The group in charge of running a business - the employer
Collective Bargaining Managers and union representatives discuss problems and attempt to agree on solutions. This is often succesful and results in an agreement.
Strike Refusal to work - done by members of a labor union
Injunction Employer(management) gets a court order forbidding workers to strike, picket or boycott on the grounds that such an action may cause damage to the employer
Arbitration or Mediation When a neutral person or group of neutral people is called in to help union and management solve their problems.
Picket Parading back and forth in front of a striking factory of place of business to tell the public not to deal with the company and to try to prevent strikebreakers from entering the building. Done by members of a labor union.
Boycott Workers and general public refuse to buy the products or services of a company whose workers are in a dispute with mangement.
Yellow Dog Contract Management forces workers to sign a statement that they are not members of a alabor union and will not join a union in the future. The person must sign the paper to get the job. If the employee breaks this contract, the person would lose his/her job.
Black List A list containing the names of workers who were union members or were active in union activities. The list is circulated among many different employers. Blacklisted workers are labeled as troublemakers and frequently denied jobs.
Lockout The employer refuses to permit employees to work until they accept the conditions of employment.
