What sort of government was created after the American Revolution? Describe it. First Articles of Confederation, there was more power to the states then the constitution.
Who were the writers of the Federalist Papers? Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, James Madison.
What was Shays' Rebellion? What was the effect? Farmers in Massachusetts rebelled because of the high taxes they were asked to pay. They had their property sold to pay off debt.
What issue upheld ratifying the Articles of Confederation? Some states gave up their Western Land.
What is a township? What states were part of the NW territory (name 6)? Township was the land that was used in the Land Ordinance of 1787 to divide the land and make it available to sell. States: Conn. Mass. Georgia, NY, VA, NC, SC
What is an amendment? An addition or change ex Bill of right's amendments 1-10
What is the difference between Antifederalists and Federalists? Anti:did not want to ratify the Constitution unless a Bill of Rights was added and they worried that the Constitution gave the states too little power. Fed:Wanted to ratify constitution and have the central govn't to have more power than the states.
What issues and incident led to the Constitution Convention? Shays Rebellion, no uniform currency, trade disputes between states, on legislative govn't and no judicial or excitative govn't.
What was the purpose of the Federalist Papers? To convince states to ratify the constitution.
What benefits did the Confederation congress Receive with control of the Northwest Territories? They could sell land for money.
What is Federalism? A system of govn't in which power was shared between National Govn't and the states.
Who had the most power under the Articles of Confederation? The states held the most power.
Which important powers were denied the national government under the Articles of Confederation? Couldn't revy taxes, regulate trade in states, debt or currency.
what is the purpose of the Constitution? Supreme law of land.
How did the Virginia Plan differ from the New Jersey Plan? VP: 2 house of rep. and 3 branches of govn't NJP: 1 house 1 state and 1 vote.
What is Civic Virtue? Citizens are obligated to be active, loyal and supportive to all member of the union (most choose to be active).
Who are some of the men considered the founding fathers? Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and James Madison.
What issue Held up ratifying the Constitution? No Bill of Rights.
Who was the President of the Constitutional Convention? George Washington.
What were the Federalist Papers? Essays published in papers and pamphlets convincing states to vote for ratification.
What does it mean to ratify something? To approve.
HOw did the Articles of Confederation get amended? Need an unanimous vote (all 13 states) in order to change.
Which of govn't did the Articles of Confederation create? The Legislative branch.
What does Unicameral and bicameral mean? Unicameral: one house legislative Bicameral: two house legislative.
What was the Three Fifths Compromise? It was the way to count the black or slaves (counted as 3/5 of a person).
What was the Land Ordinance of 1785? Was a way to divided North land into townships.
What was the NOrthwest Ordinance? Described how the Northwest land would be governed.
What is the purpose of the Declaration of Independence? To Declare Independence from England.
What is the purpose of the Vill of Rights? To set rules and define people's rights.
In what year did the Constitution Convention first meet? 1787.
What years were the critical period? 1783-1789
During this who could vote? the people.
Who was: George Mason, James Madison, Edmond Randolph and William Patterson? GM: Leader of Antifederalists JM:a founding father EP: founder of the Virginia Plan WP: Founder of the great compromise.
