Why were the colonies called the "Middle Colonies"? Colonies were located along the middle of the Atlantic Coast
What does the topography consist of? Fertile soil, forests, lowlands
What were the states that made up the Middle Colonies? New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware
Where does the Hudson River flow? Hudson River flows through the eastern part of New York and flows into sea at New York City
What was PA's largest city? Where was it located? Philadelphia; located on Delaware River
Why did the farmers of the Middle Colonies have an easier time farming than the New England farmers? The climate of the Middle Colonies was warmer and had longer growing seasons, and the fertile soil allowed crops like wheat, fruit, and vegetables to grow abudantly
What did the Middle Colonies' economy rely on? Iron, grain, lumber; some cattle, fish and rum
What was New Amsterdam? trading station founded by Dutch in 1625; located @ mouth of Hudson River
What is a synagogue? Where was the 1st synagogue of North America built? Synagogues are houses of Jewish worship; built in New Amsterdam
Why was the British g'vmt angry w/ the trade going on between Dutch/English? It was against law for English to trade w/ the Dutch
What was the major issue w/ New Netherland? Small population
Why was there tension in between Holland and England? New Netherland separated the northern English colonies from the south, and the Dutch and English were rivals @ trade
What happened to New Netherland in 1664? King Charles II granted the right of New Netherland's land to his brother James; James sent troops to the land and the Dutch surrendered
What was New Netherland renamed after it was conquered by James? What was it named after? New York; after James, the Duke of York
What did New Amsterdam become after New Netherland's conquering by James? New York City
What did New York become in 1685? What does that mean? New York became a proprietary colony; a colony created by a grant of land from the monarch to the individual/family
What was established in 1665? What was it originally a part of before it split? New Jersey; originally a part of New York
What happened to New Jersey in 1702? What does it mean? New Jersey recieved a charter, declaring it a royal colony; a colony that is controlled directly by the king
Who were the Quakers? A new Protestant group in England during the 1640s + 1650s; they believed ppl had a direct link ("inner light") w/ God and believed all ppl are equal in God's eyes
What were the results of the Quakers' beliefs? The Quakers did not need ministers to be able to communicate w/ God, they were amongst the first to speak out against slavery, and woman were equal to men in spiritual matters, often leading Quaker meetings. They suffered from persecution, however
Why were the Quakers persecuted? The Quakers did not pay taxes to support the Church of England
Who was William Penn? Wealth man who knew King Charles II personally, and who wished to stop the persecution of the Quakers
Why did King Charles II grant the area that is now Pennsylvania to Penn in 1681, and New Jersey in 1682? King Charles II owed debts to Penn's father
How did Penn attract settlers to his colony? Penn distributed pamphlets all over Europe
What was Penn's goal that was considered the "Holy Experiment" by he himself? To create a colony in which ppl of different religious backgrounds could live together peacefully
What did Penn write in 1682? What did it do? Penn wrote the Frame of Government for Pennsylvania, which granted an elected assembly and religious freedom
What did Penn not allow the colonists to do in order to keep fair relation with the Indians? Penn did not allow colonists to settle the land until the Indians sold them
Who originally owned Delaware? Who was it taken by? After that? Swedish owned Delaware, but then taken by Dutch in 1638. After the conquering of the Dutch by James, the land was given to King Charles II, who gave it to Penn
Why did Penn give Delaware its own representative assembly The assembly in Philadelphia was too far away for the Delaware delegates
When did Delaware become a separate colony? 1704
Why was Pennsylvania considered the "breadbasket" of America? PA rendered huge wheat fields (as well as New Jersey); wheat was top cash crop
When manufacturing began to flourish, what was produced? What jobs were there? Produced iron, flour, paper. Colonists worked as shoemakers, carpenters, masons, weavers, and more
What craft was the most important? What did they do? Coopers; made barrels used to ship food, such as flour
What was the backcountry? Frontier region that extends through several colonies, from Pennsylvania to Georgia
Why was the road in the backcountry called the "Great Wagon Road"? Ppl often traveled in covered wagons through this region
