Columbian Exchange Term that referred to the exchange of goods, diseases, animals between European explorers and Native Americans. Europeans got resources, crops, syphillus. NA got measles, small pox, horses, guns, religion.
Christopher Columbus Explorer who founded "New World," thought he was in India, open era of trade and exploration.
Hernan Cortes Spanish explorer who "conquered" Aztecs, introduced the system of ecomienda, exploited people.
Jamestown First British settlement, 1607, settlers were searching for gold, starving time, saved with Indian help and tobacco cultivation.
Plymouth Colony Settled by Puritan separatists who wanted to break from England. Mayflower 1620
Massachusetts Bay Colony Colony founded by the Puritans in New England in 1630, John Winthrop, "City on a Hill," strict religious society
Roger Williams advocated "wall of separation" between church and state, banished to RI, starts Baptist church.
Indentured Servants colonists who received free passage to North America in exchange for 5-7 year labor term, young single men.
Bacon's Rellion 1676, former indentured servants upset about Indians on frontier, Berkeley was trading guns for furs, attack Jamestown, class tensions....rise of SLAVERY!
Middle Passage a voyage that brought enslaved Africans across the Atlantic Ocean to North America and the West Indies
Triangle Trade A trade route which exchanged goods between the West Indies, the American colonies, and West Africa. Sugar-Rum-Slaves.
