joint stock company A business formed by a group of people who jointly make an investment and share in the profits and losses.
starving time A period of forced starvation initiated by the Powhatan Confederacy to remove the English from Virginia.
authority Power or right to rule.
Headright system Colonists paid their own way to Virginia and received 50 acres of land. Also, they get an additional 50 acres for anyone else brought over including family or servants.
indentured servant A colonist who received free passage to North America in exchange for working without pay for certain numbers of years.
factor Cause.
Bacon's Rebellion An attack led by Nathaniel Bacon against American Indians and the colonial government in Virginia.
religious persecution Mistreatment of a person because of his/her religious beliefs or practices.
refuge A safe place.
Royal colony A colony owned by a king or queen.
Proprietary colony When the king granted a charter/rights of a colony to one or more individuals.
Slave codes Laws passed in the colonies to control slaves.
Toleration Act of 1649 A Maryland law that made restricting the religious rights of Christians a crime; the first law guaranteeing religious freedom to be passed in America.
Representative Government A government in which citizens are elected to do the work of the government for the larger group.
Middle Passage A voyage that brought enslaved Africans across the Atlantic Ocean to North America and the West Indies.
African Diaspora The population of displaced Africans and their descendants around the world.
Triangular trade Trading networks in which goods and slaves moved among England, the American colonies, and Africa.
