A company backed by investors, who buy shares of stock of the company to earn profits. Profits and losses are divided. Joint-Stock Company
A written contract that was issued by the government and gave the holder the right to establish a colony. Charter
The first permanent English settlement, founded by people who were financed by the Virginia Company of London. Jamestown
A soldier and adventurer who started getting Jamestown to grow. He was later injured and returned to England. John Smith
People who sold their labor for passage into the colonies. They could later start work once they paid off their debt. Indentured Servant
Representatives of the colonists met annually in an assembly. First representative assembly in the colonies. House of Burgesses
Sparked when a governor refused to approve a war for Nathaniel Bacon. Bacon burned down most of Jamestown, but his death ended the rebellion. Led to the House of Burgesses taking steps against tyranny. Bacon's Rebellion
A Separatist group who fled England to escape harsh treatment and eventually sailed to the Americas on the Mayflower. Pilgrims
